A Guide on What Lions Eat and How They Hunt

If a lion gets hungry and can’t find the food it needs, it will eat whatever it can find. The type of food available in the area where they live will determine which animals lions hunt. The scrub country, which lions prefer more than any other area, is home to many types of herbivores. Wildebeests, antelopes, and gazelles are their favorites. However, they also love warthogs.  Even though they can target large animals like buffaloes or giraffes with great difficulty, it is a dangerous task that can endanger their lives.three lions

Senses and Deficiencies

Lions depend on their sight for hunting. Experts have seen individuals sometimes hiding under vegetation to track a specific animal they are following. Sometimes, however, they may accidentally give themselves up in the process.

Sometimes, lions can hear their prey and detect them. Lions often respond to sounds of animals moving through water or walking, and they set out to investigate. There have been instances where lions used their sense of smell in hunting.

Lions are Pack Hunters

Another reason lions can find enough food is their cooperative hunting. Although they will often stalk their prey for as long as an hour, it is common for them to wait fifteen minutes before taking the plunge. In normal circumstances, several lions will circle the herd they are attacking and slowly drive their victims towards their friends, hiding in tall grass.

These lionesses (usually females) then attack their prey from either the side or rear. Another problem that lions face is their slow speed. This can be overcome by cooperative hunting. These mighty beasts are not slow by our standards. Their top seed speed is 30mph, but they can only sustain that for about a minute. They rarely chase prey for more than 100 meters. They can tackle prey items that are too fast or too elusive by working together in groups.
